Hidden Cards in Klondike: What Should You Reveal First?
Revealing face-down tableau cards is the main engine of Klondike. Use these priorities to decide which column to open and which move can wait.
Hidden cards are your main objective
Most lost Klondike games are not caused by a missing foundation move. They are caused by face-down cards that never become accessible. Every hidden card may contain the ace, king, or connecting card needed to continue the deal.
Prioritize columns with more hidden cards
When two moves are equally safe, prefer the move that exposes a card from a deeper column. Opening a column with four hidden cards creates more future opportunities than working on a nearly empty column.
This is a priority, not an absolute rule. A shallow column may still be the right choice if it creates an empty space for a useful king.
Compare moves before committing
Sometimes the same red seven can accept either a black six from one column or another. Check what each move reveals. Prefer the option that turns a hidden card, frees a useful sequence, or creates an empty column.
Avoid moving cards between columns when the move changes nothing underneath. These neutral moves can make the board look active without improving it.
Use foundations carefully
Moving a card to a foundation can uncover a hidden card, and that is usually valuable. But sending both cards of one color too high can block a tableau sequence. Keep opposite-color ranks reasonably balanced until the tableau is open.
Empty columns are tools
An empty column can hold only a king in standard Klondike. Do not clear a column unless you have a king or king-led sequence ready to use it. An empty space with no playable king may reduce your options instead of increasing them.
The best question to ask
Before every move, ask: what new information or access does this create? A strong move reveals a card, opens a column, unlocks the waste, or prepares a necessary sequence. If it does none of these, look for a more productive option first.
