How the Stock and Waste Piles Work in Solitaire

The stock and waste control which cards enter play. Master their order, passes, and timing to avoid blocking a winnable Klondike deal.

Stock and waste basics

The stock contains the cards that were not dealt into the tableau. Turning cards from the stock places them face up on the waste pile. Only the exposed waste card can be played.

In Draw 1, cards enter the waste one at a time. In Draw 3, they enter in groups of three and only the last card dealt is available.

Why order matters

The stock is not a random supply of new moves. It is an ordered sequence. When you remove a waste card, you change which cards will be exposed on later passes. This is especially important in Draw 3, where one removal can shift the accessible cards.

Before playing from the waste, check whether the move reveals something more valuable behind it. A card that opens a face-down tableau card is usually more useful than one that only moves to a foundation.

How many times can you recycle the stock?

Rules vary. Some games allow unlimited passes. Traditional scoring formats may allow only one or three passes. Always check the selected mode before assuming you can return to a missed card later.

With limited passes, avoid cycling through the stock without a plan. Identify the cards you need, then create their destination before the final pass.

Common stock mistakes

Do not automatically send every ace or low card to the foundation. You may need that card in the tableau to move a sequence. Do not play the first available waste card simply because it fits. And do not ignore the effect a move has on the order of the next pass.

A simple stock routine

Scan the tableau first. Decide which rank or color would reveal a hidden card. Then inspect the waste for that target. After each stock move, recheck the tableau because the new card may create a better move than continuing through the stock.

Treating the stock as a planned sequence instead of a button to click is one of the fastest ways to improve at Klondike.
