From patience to Solitaire

Single-player card games became widely documented in Europe during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In many countries they are still called patience games, a name that reflects the quiet, methodical nature of play.

The word Solitaire is now commonly used for the whole family and, in everyday English, often refers specifically to Klondike.

A family of games

Solitaire was never one fixed game. Klondike, Spider, FreeCell, Pyramid, Golf, and many other variants use different layouts and skills. Some depend heavily on the order of hidden cards, while others expose the full deal and behave more like logic puzzles.

Printed rule books helped these variants travel, but local names and rule differences remained common.

The computer era

Personal computers transformed Solitaire from a tabletop pastime into one of the most familiar digital games. Computer versions made setup instant, enforced legal moves, kept score, and allowed players to restart without shuffling.

Solitaire also helped many new computer users practice basic mouse actions such as clicking and dragging.

Why it remained popular

The game requires no opponent, fits into a short break, and offers a clear finish. A deal can feel familiar without being identical to the previous one. That balance between routine and uncertainty is unusually durable.

Modern versions add daily challenges, statistics, themes, hints, and cross-device play, but the central appeal remains simple: organize a difficult layout one useful move at a time.

A living card-game tradition

Digital play did not replace the original card game. It expanded it. Millions of players now know Klondike through a screen, while Spider and FreeCell have become major games in their own right. Solitaire continues to evolve because its basic structure adapts easily to new devices without losing its identity.
