FreeCell lets you move sequences when enough temporary space is available. Learn the practical rule behind supermoves and avoid breaking a plan halfway.

Why FreeCell sequences can move

Physical FreeCell rules describe moving one card at a time. Digital versions often perform a series of legal single-card moves automatically. This shortcut is called a supermove.

A supermove is possible only when the free cells and empty tableau columns provide enough temporary storage.

The basic capacity rule

With no empty tableau columns, you can move one card plus one additional card for each empty free cell. If three free cells are empty, a four-card alternating sequence can be moved.

Each usable empty tableau column multiplies that capacity because it can temporarily hold part of the sequence. A common practical formula is:

Maximum movable cards = (empty free cells + 1) × 2 to the power of usable empty columns.

If the destination itself is an empty column, do not count that column as temporary storage.

A simple example

Suppose two free cells and one other tableau column are empty. You can normally move up to six properly ordered cards: (2 + 1) × 2. The game may animate this as one move, but it is equivalent to several legal transfers.

Why players miscalculate

A column may look empty but be the intended destination, so it cannot also help hold cards. Another free cell may contain a card you planned to move later. Count only spaces that are genuinely available during the whole operation.

Strategic use

Do not fill free cells casually. Every occupied cell reduces sequence mobility. Try to place cards in free cells only when the move reveals a useful lower card or quickly sends the stored card to a foundation.

Before building a long sequence, verify that you can move it when needed. In FreeCell, mobility is measurable. Counting your available spaces turns a vague plan into a reliable one.
